In 2006 Erik Buell announce he was building 50 Production Race Motorcycles for Privateer use that would be competitive and capable of winning under the terms of the AMA Formula Extreme Class created for 550cc-600cc 4-stroke liquid-cooled 4-valve four cylinders, 650cc-675cc 4-stroke liquid-cooled 4-valve three cylinders, 650cc-850cc 4-stroke liquid-cooled 4-valve twin cylinders, 990cc-1100cc 4-stroke air/oil-cooled 2-valve desmo twin cylinders, 990cc-1200cc 4-stroke air/oil-cooled 4-valve pushrod twin cylinders and 900cc-1350cc 4-stroke air/oil-cooled 2-valve pushrod twin cylinders. At 1, 339cc, the Buell Thunderstorm V-Twin had what it took on paper to be class competitive and at cost of $30, 995, was finically within reach of riders looking for to level the field with the Factory teams.
